50 days left to FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Opener in Sölden
The Audi FIS World Cup will start its season 2018/19 on the Rettenbach Glacier close to Sölden (AUT) on the weekend of the 27th and 28th October 2018.
Both of last year’s overall winners, Marcel Hirscher (AUT) and Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) will be at the start and eager to have a strong showing, especially as both were not able to win the opening race since 2014.
Last year, Viktoria Rebensburg (GER) started the season with a win in Sölden and was able keep her giant slalom form all the way to the win of the crystal globe at the Finals in Are (SWE). Tessa Worley (FRA), second in the 2017/18 standings and Manuela Moelgg (ITA), who retired after last season, completed the 2017 podium. On the men’s side, the race had to be cancelled early in the morning due to a strong storm that blew across Europe last year.
With its status and international standing, Sölden is more than just a ski race organised at the customary high standards of the Austrian Ski Federation andLocal Organising Committees. Signifying the always anticipated start of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season, the occasion includes a get together of the ski industry, the National Ski Associations and the sponsors, many of whom take the opportunity to introduce their latest news, developments and products. A multitude of press conferences and athlete signings await the ski world, including the traditional FIS Alpine Forum on Friday afternoon at 13:30.
Ski fans are present in numbers to cheer for their favourite athletes and to celebrate the beginning of the winter season in style.
